Municipal addresses and address changes

The Town of Milton assigns municipal addresses when a new construction application is submitted or when a new lot is created; municipal address changes are considered on a case-by-case basis.

From Milton’s own page, checked Oct 2026.

The municipality lists what to submit. CodeEase shows what the building code asks of it. See CodeEase →

  1. Check how addresses are assigned

    • The Town of Milton assigns municipal addresses when a new construction application is submitted or when a new lot is created.
    • For corner lots, the municipal address is assigned based on the street where the driveway access is located.
    • Canada Post is responsible for assigning postal codes.
    • If you recently purchased a newly constructed home and need to confirm your municipal address, contact your builder.
    • Builders are responsible for putting up the house number for new homes.
  2. Determine whether your address is urban or rural

    • If you are unsure whether your property is located in an urban or rural area, contact the Town of Milton at 905-878-7252 ext. 2398.
    • Assessment roll number or PIN
    • Street name
    • If you do not know your assessment roll number, contact the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) or refer to your property tax bill.
  3. Only if you own a home in a rural area

Green municipal address signs in rural areas

    • If you own a home in a rural area, you are responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a green municipal address sign.
    • These signs are required at the entrance to your property so emergency responders can clearly identify your address.
    • You may purchase a green municipal address sign from any sign company that meets the Town's green municipal address sign standards.
    • Review the rural address sign flyer for additional information.
  4. Request a municipal address change

    • Municipal address changes are considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Addresses are assigned using a pre-determined numbering system to help ensure consistency, avoid duplicate addresses, and support emergency services.
    • Address changes must align with the Town's address numbering system and emergency service requirements.
    • Approval is not guaranteed.
  5. Submit your application

    • Complete the Address Number Change Application Form online.
  6. Pay the fee

    • If your municipal address change application is approved, a Municipal Housing Number Change fee must be paid before the address is officially changed.
