Overview

A two-page brochure in the City of Markham's Heritage Matters series, first issued April 2008 and revised June 2025, reprinting the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism's eight guiding principles for conserving built heritage properties, which Markham applies in its heritage conservation work. Each principle carries a short rule and its reason: respect for documentary evidence, original location, historic material, original fabric and the building's history, reversibility, legibility and maintenance, with an example of numbering and storing stones when a new door opening is cut.

What it covers

  • Respect for Documentary Evidence
  • Respect for the Original Location
  • Respect for Historic Material
  • Respect for Original Fabric
  • Respect for the Building's History
  • Reversibility
  • Legibility
  • Maintenance
Check this against the municipality before you rely on it.

DocHub collects what a municipality published; it cannot tell you what is in force today. A newer version may exist, may be titled differently, or may not be posted publicly at all.
