Overview

A two-page brochure in the City of Markham's Heritage Matters…in Markham series, first issued October 2008 and revised June 2025, on heritage easement agreements under the Ontario Heritage Act. It explains what an easement is, that Markham's run in perpetuity, how they differ from designation, the owner's obligations on approvals, insurance and maintenance, effects on property value, the benefits to the municipality, and when the City secures them, such as for restoration funding, property tax reductions or planning approvals. It points to the separate Understanding the Heritage Easement Agreement brochure.

What it covers

  • What is a heritage easement?
  • How long does an easement run?
  • How are heritage easements different than heritage designation?
  • What are the main impacts on the owner?
  • Does a heritage easement impact property value?
  • What are the benefits to the Municipality?
  • Who is responsible for administration of the easement?
  • When are heritage easements secured by the Municipality?
Check this against the municipality before you rely on it.

DocHub collects what a municipality published; it cannot tell you what is in force today. A newer version may exist, may be titled differently, or may not be posted publicly at all.
